But we need to say it upfront: The Mexican sour gherkin is NOT a cucumber. Yes, they both belong to the same gourd family “Cucurbitaceae” and the gherkin is often called a “miniature cucumber” but they are from different cultivar groups. ... So, gherkins are pickles but pickles are not gherkins (just pickled cucumbers).

I don’t call anything a pickle without defining what it is, be it pickled gherkin, cucumber, egg, onion, etc... Lol.
There are some European countries that class a gherkin, cucumber and courgette as the same thing, the U.K. isn’t one of them. :)
These are gherkins that have been pickled, just as I’ve sliced up cucu mbers and pickled them in the past, they were pickled cucumber slices .

I quite fancy some bitterballen or kroke tten right now.
But if I want to get them it’s £19 for 50 bitterballen, £20 for 18 kroketten or £16 for 40 Beckers frikandellen and the website is out of frites saus. :(

I thought gherkins were regular pickles and I was massively disappointed the first time I tried one. I tend to really enjoy pickles as well, like regular pickles (cucumbers, I guess), onions, peppers, and especially pickled spicy eggplant.
I was going to say that this looked a bit plain for you, Svend, but after seeing the bun toasting, the nice colour on the burger, and the hash browns that look like they were made with a ring mould... this looks fucking excellent.

I think in the U.S. a ‘pickle’ is a specific item.
But here a pickle just means something that has been pickled, not what it is.
Like you may have some pickled onions with a salad, a pickled egg with fish and chips or sliced pickled gherkins in a burger.
I wanted a plain burger to really taste the flavour of the burger on it’s own merit.
I’m tempted to go and make a burger right now.

I definitely don’t mind a plain cheeseburger that’s cooked well. Brioche buns are awesome, and I like the “smashed” burger where you cook a couple of thin patties on really high heat to get a nice sear on each side, and thin enough to cook in a couple of minutes.
I haven’t made it in a while since i t’s probably not a healthy to have brioche-bun cheeseburgers for three nights in a row just to use up all the ingredients I bought.

Once you’ve tried brioche. it’s hard to go back to a regular bun again if there is choice.
I saw ‘smashed’ and immediately thought of smashed potatoes topped with grated cheese.

Smashed potatoes are easy. Bake some medium to large potatoes, brush them with butter. Once they’ve cooked through and a sharp knife can be put threw them with no resistance. Gently hit them with the bottom of a cup to break them open. Brush with more butter and cook for ten more minutes, take out, brush again then add the grated cheese and return to the oven for a further five or so minutes or until melted.
((you can bypass the initial baking stage by piercing them all over with a fork, loosely covering them with k itchen paper towel then microwaving them at 850-900 for ten or 11 minutes, then smash them)).
Just got back up stairs from making a half pounder plain burger.
Yep, tastes pretty good.
